Unexplained infertility is a catch-all term used when Western medical doctors cannot find a cause for infertility after a full series of tests and assessments. There are numerous causes of infertility; this can make infertility a frustrating obstacle to overcome. Some experts believe those people who are significantly over- or underweight, exercise excessively or are even exposure to environmental toxins may contribute to fertility disorders, however often no direct links have been confirmed.
It is very rare for a patient receiving traditional Chinese medicine to be diagnosed with unexplained infertility. TCM can often offer a diagnosis where Western medicine fails to do so.
An important factor to consider is the length of time a couple has been trying to conceive. Couples diagnosed with unexplained infertility, who have been trying for less than five years, have about a 15-30 per cent chance of becoming pregnant in a given year. After five years, fewer than 10 per cent become pregnant without treatment.
In the case of unexplained infertility, a solution using acupuncture and/or herbal treatments can usually be determined.
